Final exam questions - Deal with It

This post aims to help students familiar with the final exam questions specifically on how you can attempt it wisely. This is my first semester after came back from study leave and me myself also not familiar with the format, however, I try my best to provide some suggestions based on my experience as a lecturer.

Here are some tips that may benefit you.

Tips # 1

Get ready before the final exam. Plan your revision schedule by considering other subjects and make sure you have at least two days to focus on this subject.

Tips # 2

Once the invigilator asks you to start the exam, read all the questions and provide 10 to15 minutes to write the main point at the question paper. Do not panic, stay calm as it can help you think clearly and remember the main point (answers).

If you can't remember the answer on some questions, never mind! You should proceed to other questions. Later, you read again and try to answer the previous questions. Insyallah, during the 3 hours examination you may get the ideas on how to answer it.

Tips # 3

After 15 minutes end, you already write down the important points in the question paper. Now, you may start to write your actual answer in the answer booklet. The booklet is yours, wholly yours. We never share it with other people so, do not worry about the space. Use it like a boss!

Okay, how to act like a BOSS?

Design a template for each question in the booklet even though you still don't have the exact answer. Spare an "answer space" for each question allows you to reach/capture the ideas to answer the question later on.

Here you go...

Part A contains 4 questions and each question is divided into (a) and (b). Each sub-question carries 5 marks. Altogether, part A weights 40 marks ((4 questions x 2 sub-questions) X 5 marks). Part A section aims to test students on basic knowledge of MGT300 therefore, the question will start with "state", "list", "define", "differentiate" and a specific number of expected answers are also stated. For example;

a) List four (4) common departments in an organization.

Read carefully the whole sentence in the questions. Pay attention to the word "list four (4)" - it just asks you to write down four points and require no explanation.

Okay, students are asked to list four (4) what? look at the next word "common departments". By now, you should understand it ask you to tell/ recall/ list (in the examination case - to write down)  four (4) common departments available in an organization.

So, how the four (4) points will satisfy 5 marks? The answer is 1 point carry 1.25 marks. This is the reason why you should not leave the question with no answer.

While you reading the question, underline/ circle/ mark every requirement in the sentence (look how I did it).

For the first 15 minutes, attempt the answer by write down some important points in the question paper.

So, it is supposed to look like this in the booklet. What you need to do is write down the classification of the question (PART A and PART B), also the sub-questions (a) and (b).  In order to keep you in the ALERT mode, rewrite the questions in the answer sheet accordingly. Please rewrite the questions without any hesitation because it will stimulate your mind to dig out answer/ ideas in your brain.

Design a template ("answer space") for each question.

After read all the questions, you can visualize the final answer in your mind.

Okay, now Part B. For Part B, there are 3 questions and each carries 20 marks. Each question is divided into sub-question (a) 10 marks and (b) 10 marks. Total mark for Part B is 60 marks ((3 questions X 2 sub-questions) X 10 marks).

Apply the same approach to Part B section. Write down the important/ key points for each question that come in your mind. Make sure you do this in the early 15 to 20 minutes after invigilator allows you to start the examination (read Tips # 2). If you are not sure or can not remember the answer, it is OKAY. Stay calm, just write the answer you are certain with. Later, you will revisit the question, and try easily to provide the real answer.

REMEMBER 3 hours is a plenty of time for you to enjoy the MGT 300 hardship.

Underline the requirement for each question. Write the key point or some note that may help you later.

Again, design a template for each question. All you need to do is to rewrite the questions.

As the mark is higher compared to Part A, I suggest 10 marks will require for a full page of the answer sheet. The rule is simple, one question for one page.

Okay, for PART B this is a long essay question. The question will start with common instructions such as "explain", "describe", "with an aid of diagram, explain" or "discuss". Do not forget to underline/ remark the requirement in the question after the instructions.

You should know by now that for tackle this type of questions, your answer need three (3) features to satisfy 10 marks.

1. key point/ answer
2. explanation
3. example

We are also expected to read a longer answer in Part B section as it demonstrates your understanding of the concept and theory. If the question asks 4 main points, you should allocate around 3 to  4 lines for explanation and simple example if any. If the question requires only 2 points, you are expected to write more explanation and try to blend the example in your answer. You can draw the related diagram (even though it is not asked in the questions) in order to attempt 5 marks (2 points x 5 marks = 10)

Tips # 4

WRITE YOUR ANSWER. The template will not award you any mark except you able to write at least the key point.

However, the template actually helps to reminds you that each space needs an answer.

Tips # 5

This is very important. DO NOT LEAVE ANY QUESTION without ANSWER. Along 3 hours you can daydream, sleep, sing, pray/ zikir or doodle but always TRY to provide an answer or maybe an example to help you to secure at least 0.5 marks.

Tips # 6

Time is money. It is the most valuable resources that specifically ALLAH creates for each of us. You have 3 hours, your friends also have 3 hours, Allah gives equal time to everybody. But, you must have proper planning on how to make use the three hours. Look at the allocation of marks for every question because it can tell you how much time you should spend.

Ok I think this is long enough for you to read and practice it. After all, I believe Allah's fate is the best for us. Doesn't matter either this is your first, second, or the third-time seat for MGT 300 paper. Allah is teaching us every day so that we can be a better person. I pray for all of you that this may not the first time but surely it will be the last time you take this paper. Insyallah.
